When it comes to soffits and interior cladding, #2 & Btr STK Douglas-Fir sourced from British Columbia delivers a balance of strength, natural beauty, and reliability. Known for its straight grain, warm tone, and exceptional stability, fir creates a clean, architectural finish ideal for overhead applications. Responsibly harvested from BC’s sustainably managed forests, it’s a material choice that combines long-lasting performance with environmentally conscious building practices.
Coastal Douglas‑fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii), native to British Columbia, delivers an outstanding strength‑to‑weight ratio and excellent dimensional stability—ideal for exterior cladding and soffits where boards span horizontally or vertically.
On the Janka hardness scale, Douglas‑fir rates around 660 lbf versus cedar’s ~350 lbf, offering greater resistance to dents and mechanical wear.
The timber is prized for its high strength-to-weight ratio, providing excellent stability for overhead applications. Its straight grain structure reduces movement, minimizing the risk of sagging or cupping over time.
While Western Red Cedar is slightly more decay-resistant, Douglas‑fir still rates Class 3 (“moderately durable”), thanks to its resin acids and lignin structure.
This makes it well-suited to resist moisture, mildew, and fungi when properly installed and sealed.
Douglas-Fir offers a warm reddish-brown tone with a distinctive, straight grain pattern that elevates the appearance of soffits and interior ceilings. Whether left natural or finished with a clear coat or stain, fir delivers a timeless architectural look that complements a range of exterior and interior styles.
BC-grown Douglas-Fir trees are tall and uniform, allowing the production of long, straight boards. This results in fewer seams and joints in soffit installations, creating a cleaner, more refined aesthetic for eaves, covered walkways, and porch ceilings.
As a softwood, fir is easy to cut, shape, and fasten, making it a contractor-friendly option for soffits and interior cladding. It accepts finishes well, whether you’re aiming for a natural look, a semi-transparent stain, or a painted surface.
